Final Sunset plan of BNB Beacon Chain

This announcement is to update all community members about the final sunset plan of the BNB Beacon Chain. As members are aware, BNB Beacon Chain validators agree that they will stop running the validators by the upcoming mid-November to complete the sunset. By then, BNB Beacon Chain will halt running and stop processing any new transactions.

The decision aligns with the BNB Chain Fusion, a strategic plan to fuse BNB Beacon Chain’s functionalities with the BNB Smart Chain (BSC). The move aims to streamline the network, reduce security risks, improve efficiency, and align BNB Chain’s architecture with growing technological demands and future growth.

We strongly urge users and centralized exchanges to take specific actions to prevent the complete loss of their assets. The required actions and other relevant information are listed below.

Actions For BNB Beacon Chain Assets Holders

BNB Beacon Chain assets holders are urged to transfer their BEP-2 and BEP-8 (mini BEP-2 tokens) from the BNB Beacon Chain to the BSC immediately. The transfers can be made through centralized and decentralized exchanges or by wallets.

While we can report that most of the assets have been migrated, some BEP-2/8 assets remain on the BNB Beacon Chain. We urge BNB Beacon Chain assets holders to initiate the migration process immediately to prevent losing access to their assets. Failure to do so may lead to irreversible losses, with no chance of a recovery of the assets in question.

For detailed steps on how to migrate your assets, refer to the official migration guide.

Actions For Centralized Exchanges

For CEXs that still support the BNB Beacon Chain, the following actions are required:

  1. Disable Deposits: All deposit functions to the BNB Beacon Chain should be halted as soon as possible to prevent further transactions on the network.
  2. Consolidate BEP2 Assets: CEXs should consolidate remaining BEP2 assets into secure cold storage wallets to maximize security ahead of the Beacon Chain’s shutdown.

Overview of All Required Actions

RoleActionConsequences of Inaction
BEP-2/BEP-8 Token HoldersMigrate their tokens to BNB Smart ChainUsers can recover binded tokens even after BNB Beacon Chain is shut. However, tokens not binded will be lost
Centralized Exchanges Disable all deposit functions to the BNB Beacon Chain and consolidate remaining BEP-2 assets into cold walletsIf CEXes do not promptly gather all BEP2/BEP8 tokens from user deposit addresses, they will face significant recovery challenges and costs. Unbound or unconsolidated tokens risk being lost.

Post-BC Fusion Historical Data Access

After the final sunset, cross-chain communication between the Beacon Chain and BSC will be completely halted. Here are some things to keep in mind.

  • Blockchain Data Access: Despite the fusion, blockchain data will still be accessible through multiple BC RPC nodes and snapshots uploaded to platforms like Greenfield. The mainnet explorer will also remain active for viewing historical data.
  • Balance Snapshots: A snapshot of user balances will be taken at a specific block height following the fusion. Users can easily verify their balances using the provided links and tools.
  • Token Migration: A token recovery tool will be available for users to migrate BEP2/BEP8 assets from the Beacon Chain to BSC after the BNB Beacon Chain sunset. However, assets without cross-chain functionality will be permanently lost.

For further details, users and the community can refer to the BEP 333 proposal.

Act Now

With the BNB Beacon Chain’s stoppage approaching, it’s vital to act swiftly to ensure your assets are safe. Whether you’re a user holding BEP2 assets or a CEX managing Beacon Chain assets, prompt action is necessary to avoid complications during the transition.
